Today my drawing got likened to one of Freud's self portraits. The model looked much older than the top version of him in red chalk, but a wee bit younger than the bottom charcoal version. I don't think he was very flattered when he saw it;-) I had done the metamorphosis exercise before and wanted to see if I could play with his age instead of turning him into something else. Others drew him as half zebra, Julius Caesar, a blue sillouette with yellow breasts, an angel with a cat angel sitting at his feet, and sitting in his chair along side the ocean to name a few.The bottom drawing was actually a very close likeness to the model and I was asked if I had taken the portrait course. There is no way I could ever work with coloured pencils this way. The minute details are too great and the paper would be destroyed with the constant changes that would occur in order for the piece to evolve. That's why I need to learn to paint with oil! In the meantime line drawings remain the staple for my work. I am finding a growing dissatisfaction in working this way. It's not loose enough. You can't just try something for the heck of it and then change it if you don't like it. Coloured pencil is so....regimented. You need to know what you will absolutely do before you start laying down the layers. Oh well, next September is another semester. Until then I'll plug away at the coloured pencil portraits.
Here's a challenge to any one interested, or even if you are not please try anyways!!!!
Draw, paint, build or even draw a cartoon if you want, of a nude. (Tastefully done either male or female;-) Email it to sandi@fletcherartstudio.ca and I'll post it. If you want your name left off I can. I think it would be great fun to see what everyone comes up with. And believe me, if you think you can't draw, you can. I've seen all kinds of bizzare drawings from so called professional artists! Everyone can draw!!!
Expression can be shown through the quickness and thickness or thiness of the lines you've drawn, the position of the model, the mood of the piece etc....
Take a chance! If you don't have a model then just use your imagination. That's what I did for the younger version of my above drawing. The women in the class were impressed;-)
BTW....funny, I just accidentally posted this whole post on the wrong blog. There would have been a number of children and elderly ladies that would have been very confused! I'm sure I would have heard AGAIN of how it's a good thing my Granny up in Heaven doesn't have internet access. I still haven't lived down the last post due to it's foul language.

Oh fun post and I might give your suggestion a try. I like what you did, a lot. Interesting to see both versions.
When I first started following some of the tutorials at WetCanvas on CP, several years ago, I realized I love CP so much because you can get such "realism" with it, to me moreso than other mediums. I guess for me, using CP gave me more fine control than when I would try to paint.
But like you said, basically it is unforgiving so you need to know ahead of time what you are doing. I never got to the point that you have with CP doing such great work as you do on portraits, but I sure enjoyed working with it when I would get serious about it.
I'm too scattered and all over the place anymore to attempt to do anything real good, ha!
But I might try the nude because I can get goofy with it if I want probably.
yada yada oh wow didn't mean to write chapters upon chapters about this.
One other thing though, I have never tried a nude, never even really tried figurative at all, and can't draw the human body to save my life...so this should be interesting.
I have drawn a nude before, and someone compared my style to John Lennon's!
Sandy, the ability to work fine details and the control over the medium is also why I loved working with coloured pencil. I'm finding now though that I would love to work something in a more "raw" manner without such planning. I imagine I won't abandon coloured pencils, but would love to expand my assortment of mediums. BTW, you're too hard on yourself! And yes please try the nude!!!!
Kurt, lol! Perfect, let's see an example.
I hope you try something really expressive like a huge abstract possibly with acrylics?!?, that's what I'm thinking of trying...
I do want to try a nude, just too busy going out for these long-ass walks every day, ha! and then lots of yard work. Have grandsons this weekend which may keep me home longer..then I could try as long as they don't get carried away peeking over my shoulder, lol...
The bottom figure has substance and weight. Well worth developing. Life drawing is a real challenge.
Wonderful drawings, Sandi! I wish I had the patience for drawing the human form and greatly admire those artists who do. For some reason, I've always been drawn to drawing/painting animals more than humans.
