One type is of paticular interest:
Salvia divinorum (also known as Diviner's Sage, ska María Pastora,[3] Seer's sage,[4] and by its genus name Salvia) is a psychoactive plant which can induce dissociative effects. The plant grows to over a meter high,[1] has hollow square stems, large leaves. BINGO!
Grandma C! What have you got growing in your garden;-) Okay, I know you said yours doesn't get that big so I would imagine you have one of the other types. (Snicker.)
It seems the various types are used for different reasons. Some for tea, alzheimers treatment, and the naughty kind listed above is illegal in some places.
I'm still not sure which type the one I found was. Some require dry, well drained soil and some a swampier soil (which this seems to be.)
One more question for Grandma C. Do you know what this is and do you have any of it in your garden;-)

Kidding Grandma C! Thanks for your help. Love ya!

Yea I do know, and we did have it growing in our garden once, of course by accident.
You are welcome, the ones in our flower bed are small, got them from a nursery.
You Have Smoked it? You could get some very interesting "Before" & "After" Photos!
!
move to the town I'm from, the locals refer to it as pot dover :p
I have several in my yard and if I'm lucky, (quick identification of them soon) I may be tripping and tiptoeing through the tulips soon with a purple polka-dotted dress on and chartreus colored silk slippers ...or maybe it will just be in my imagination.
This cracked me up! We did have a plant that was growing on our land that looked somewhat like your second photo. Turns out it was a chaste berry plant. Somewhat dissappointing for us fifty-somethings! LOL
Well, Salvia looks similar, but what you have there is Cardinal Flower. I just today identified it myself, growing along the edge of a small river just east of Parry Sound (Ontario). Quite beautiful, but as far as I know, it's not psycho-active as Salvia is. :-)
